“Community starts here

Origins of the House

In the summer of 2021, a group of young activists marched 400 miles from New Orleans, LA to Houston, TX. We began our trek with one goal: to win a Civilian Climate Corps and kick off the decade of the Green New Deal.

As we journeyed through the Gulf South, we witnessed many injustices: homes destroyed by storms, families sick from pollution, workers mistreated. But among the people there, we also saw resiliency, hope, power, and love.

We realized that any positive change we seek in the world must have one thing at its core: a strong community. During that march, we became more than just activists - we became a family. It was this transformational experience that inspired us to establish the Movement House here in Dallas!

Gardening

Gardening:

  • Blackland Prairie, a unique grassland ecosystem native to the Southwest, once covered 11,500,000 acres in north Texas. Now there is less than 0.1% left.

We have dedicated one half of the Movement House’s front yard to growing native grasses and flowers, providing key habitat to native pollinators!

  • The other half of our front yard is dedicated to a community produce garden. Learning to grow our own food is revolutionary. It teaches us how to reconnect with the land, and how when we take care of her, she takes care of us back.

We hope these two gardens are an inspiration to others to convert their own yards into a native ecosystem. Especially one in which both people and creatures can thrive!

Social Events

Social Events:

  • We throw a big gathering every season (quarterly) to bring the neighborhood together. Everyone is invited!

Our goal is to help our neighbors connect with one another by providing fun, family-friendly events where folks can meet new people and make new friendships.

  • Every other Sunday we host a casual social space where anyone can join and chat from 12-1 PM.

Directly following, we host a Reading Club that explores a range of different Environmental and Social Justice topics from 1-2 PM.

Anyone can join at any time in-person or via Zoom.

Educational Events

Educational Events:

  • We host workshops covering a range of environmental and social justice topics. Some are hosted by members of our Movement House Development Team, while others are led by guest presenters and affiliate organizations.

Workshops in the past have covered topics like renewable energy, the Green New Deal, Zero Waste, and more!

If you are interested in guest hosting a workshop with us on an environmental or social justice related topic, please reach out. We love learning from others!

  • Every other Saturday we host a documentary night, paired with yummy snacks and intriguing conversation.

Each week we pick a new film to watch from a list of documentaries suggested by folks in the community.
